Dr. Maximilian Müll
- B.Sc. in Process Engineering at Offenburg University of Applied Sciences, Germany
- M.Sc. in Biotechnology at Offenburg University of Applied Sciences, Germany – double degree with the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Poland
- Ph.D. Candidate in Technical Biochemistry at University of Stuttgart, Germany
Maximilian Müll specializes in the fields of technical biochemistry, protein engineering, natural product biosynthesis, and synthetic biology. His academic background combines biotechnology and molecular biology with a strong foundation in process engineering, providing him with expertise in enzyme engineering, biosynthetic pathways, analytical chemistry, and biotechnological process development.
During his process engineering studies, Maximilian focused on energy systems, biomass utilization, and thermochemical process engineering. For his Bachelor’s research, he modelled and optimized methanation reactors using Aspen Plus. During an international research stay at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá, he further worked on the design and characterization of gasification and pyrolysis systems for the evaluation of alternative biomass fuels.
He deepened his expertise during his Master’s studies in biotechnology, focusing on food biotechnology and analytical methods. His research involved the development of a cost-effective HPTLC-based screening method for the detection and characterization of phytase activity.
For his doctoral research at the University of Stuttgart and the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology, Maximilian focused on the biosynthetic production of structurally diversified peptides. He engineered adenylation domains and nonribosomal peptide synthetases to enable the incorporation of fluorinated and other non-natural amino acids. His work enabled biosynthetic production improved peptide-based therapeutics like polymyxins, previously only available through chemical synthesis. He also gained practical exposure to patent matters relating to medical devices and vaporizers during an internship at a law firm in Stuttgart.
